Fly fishing the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River

fly fishing the mosquito lagoon, indian river Fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon is second to none when it comes to salt water fly fishing. Fly fishing can be done in these areas year round for the different fish. This is my specialty when it comes down to fishing for redfish, trout, snook, and tarpon. Throwing a fly at a tailing redfish or a rolling tarpon can get your blood pumping in the morning, better than a cup of coffee. Both the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian Rivers provide excellent areas for sight redfishing and trout fishing. The average cast you may make will be around 40 -50 feet depending on how the fish are reacting that day. Sometimes the cast may have to be longer 60-80 feet. The redfish and trout, most of the time will be in potholes in the middle of the shallow flats. The snook and tarpon will be on the shorelines and deeper open areas of the Indian River. Most of the fly fishing done in the area is site fishing so accurate fly casting in these situations is a must. I will be on hand to work with you if you have any problems or questions with casting, I don’t mind teaching.

I recommend practicing before your trip if you don’t already know. To get out in your yard and throw as far as you can with a heavier rod if you have one. I like to use 8 or 9 wt fly rods for those who aren’t used to casting farther out and 5-6 wts for the experienced fly fisherman. These lighter rods make it very challenging to land a 6-8lb redfish or a 10-15lb tarpon. I provide you with all the necessary flies, rods, and reels but if you’d like to try your own that’s fine too. I also again enjoy teaching anyone how to fly fish, from kids and adults who have never picked up a fly rod to those who have fished the smaller rivers for trout and need may some instruction on casting farther with heavier rods. I myself enjoy some of the challenges in fly fishing for these great fish of the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon

I’ve enjoyed fly fishing the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon for more than sixteen years now and would be glad to pass this knowledge on to you.
